Knotting: beat the Leader

This week we were practicing knotting, which I am always trying to make fun and exciting to learn.

I laminated some pieces of paper and wrote the name of a knot at the top of each page.

Then I gave the girls a stop watch and a whiteboard marker and said that whoever could beat my best time for tying a reef knot could choose the next game we played. That was enough incentive to have them carry on with knotting for 20 minutes without coming to see me once!

I only timed myself for tying a reef knot, however, the girls chose to challenge themselves with three other knots, trying to beat their own scores.

It was an excellent activity and even better, so simple to put together!

We never ended up playing the game because nobody beat my time (although they didn't seem to mind). I'm hoping that the girl's will practice their knots at home this week now that they have the incentive of beating my time.

Surf Smart

Last year, WAGGGS released a new program - Surf Smart. I have yet to introduce the syllabus to my girl's but the activities sound really great. Hopefully later in the year we'll have time to work through the syllabus.

From the website: Surf Smart is a non-formal education curriculum designed to inform young people about how to connect positively online, protect themselves from online threats and respect their rights and reputation on the internet.

Surf Smart is broken into three sections:

Popcorn

Lots of fun cooking popcorn over tea lights. Two lights at once gives the perfect amount of heat.

Jellyfish in a bottle

This is a great idea for the Science and Technology Explore-a-Challenge badge or even the Water or Pets Create-a-Challenge badges!

I haven't tried it out yet, but it's on the to-do list next time a science night comes around.
